A message from Professor John Beddington CMG FRS, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government and Professor of Applied Population Biology at Imperial College London:
As scientists and engineers we have a professional obligation to ensure that we act with rigour, respect and responsibility. These are the key principles outlined in the Universal Ethical Code for Scientists.
Of particular note in this Universal Code is the need for us, as scientists and engineers to:
• Ensure our work is lawful and justified
• Minimize any adverse effect or harm our work could have on others
• Not knowingly mislead or allow others to be misled
• Respect the rights and reputations of others
• Take steps to prevent corrupt practices and professional misconduct.
The use of anthrax in terrorist activity and the claims made by some supporters of alternative medicine in the absence of any scientific facts serve as examples of how science has been misused. Episodes such as these undermine the reputation of science, scientists, and engineers.
Emerging Health Threats Forum recognizes that a breakdown in the application of this code by accident, ignorance, or intent - by individuals, groups, organizations, industries, academia, and even States - could result in the emergence of the health threats this Forum is dedicated to eliminating.
I encourage those with an interest in science and engineering to contact Emerging Health Threats Forum with opinions and news, and to submit papers to the Emerging Health Threats Journal, on the potential misuse of science and any consequent adverse effects to human health.
Professor John Beddington
Chief Scientific Adviser to UK Government
